What Does A Feminist Look Like? For Ariel Winter, The Answer Is Simple And Complex.

These days, during trying social and political times, the most important F-word has been feminism. With the term being thrown around a lot in our culture, there are many who question what being a feminist means. If you ask Ariel Winter, the answer is an important one to know.

“I sometimes get upset when people say they’re feminists but they do nothing for it, they put feminists in a box,” Winter told Bustle on a recent red carpet. “I think feminism is anything you want to be.”

As the Modern Family star goes on to explain, she hates the fact that people have preconceived notions about what a feminist should look like and how they should act. Feminism, to her, is more about what beliefs you hold in regards to gender equality. This is because some people’s beliefs are still hella dated.

“There are still people who think that we have a specific role: that we can’t do the jobs that men do or the jobs that are important, that we’re meant to cook and clean and stay home with kids,” the 20-year-old added. “And here’s the thing: there’s nothing wrong with that, if somebody wants to do that.”

A pet peeve for Winter, though, is when people show that they clearly don’t understand what feminism is and what feminists are fighting for. And, when they confuse that, they potentially hurt the cause.

“The other thing that bothers me is sometimes when people say feminist, they put it in a way that makes us seem like we want to have power over everybody. We want equality. Across the board. And that’s what feminism is supposed to be,” Winter explained. “We want to be equal to everybody, to all groups in the world. We don’t need to be above anybody. Because then we’re doing what the people [are doing that] we don’t want to do. We don’t want that from them, so why would we do that?”

As for what the most important thing a feminist should do? Winter believes they should support other women because, while it’s hard for one person to make change, it’s easier when you work together.
